I think when you decide to have a closed list, it is certainly as
appropriate to just compose e-mails to each other that you want to send
the private messages to.
if i host a closed offtopic list - then it is still work on my part to
be able to guarantee for myself that no activities are taking place that
i am somehow liable for. i think person-to-person e-mail for offtopic
content is best.
