0. run clamav on the data file.
1. give her ClamWin and Spybot-S&D if she lacks adequate virus/spy-tools.
2. explain the advantages of OpenOffice/AbiWord/etc. over illicit copies
   of closed-ware.
3. copy file.doc file.txt
4. LESSCHARSET various settings - see if anything resembling text shows up.
5. discuss periodic snapshot backups
6. you did check out repairmyword.com per the other reply on the list?
8.04  alright maybe not ready for that step but this list knows what i mean :)
