Manny's suggestion of Fluendo is definitely one to look into. Aside
from that I'm surprised that VLC isn't working for you. Perhaps its
missing a plugin.

If you are using the Open Office provided by the distro I can't
imagine why it wouldn't update. Did you do a dist-upgrade?
