You have a couple options for tethering

http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/

and

http://code.google.com/p/azilink/

I don't know anyone using them on the Hero, but I know people who use both
on the G1 and are happy with it.  The wifi tether is going to drain the
battery so it'd be good to have that plugged into the laptop via usb
