Do you think the performance difference has more to do with the closed vs
open editions of VirtualBox, or with versions 1-vs-2-vs-3 of VirtualBox?

Right... the version in 8.04 repos does not feature "vboxdrv setup".

Hmm, a little more reading mentions dkms package, will have to check if
