I built a mythtv box using mythbuntu a few months ago and I've had nothing
but positive experiences.
Used an old PC i had sitting around as I'm transitioned to using mostly my
netbook or macbook pro for everything these days. Its a high end AMD X2
which is overkill since the video capture card does mpeg 2 encoding itself.
I underclock the X2 to 1ghz to be more economical and have had very little
uses. The contrast can be a bit crappy on certain things, but thats because
i went with the cheapest Hauppauge PVR card i could find just to get it up
and running. Other higher end cars do not have this problem.
I have the frontend and backend running on that PC, for my room. In the
living room I've got my netbook which also has a frontend installed on it so
that it can stream the content from the backend up stairs. The Ps3 (and i'd
assume Xbox 360) is also able to stream content already recorded as MythTV
shares out via a UPNP streaming protocol.
