I suppose that looks like a tag to a lot of people.  I've been using the 
following:

"<smile>", "<frown>", "<wry grin>" and similar, instead of smileys, in 
email, for over 30 years.  I don't think I'm going to force myself to 
change now; it's become a kind of trademark of mine.

My "<wry grin>" has become infamous in some circles; I suppose the 
closes you could get to it in a smiley is: :~  though that looks more 
like a boxer with a broken nose.

I suppose you could filter out posts from me if it bothers you.
