I'm surprise you gave up so soon Jeff. You wouldn't have been able to give up 
back in the 80's when Xenix was the only option for the Intel Platform. 

I had the same problem with the Network Manager when I installed intrepid
on my friend Sam's laptop. It was useless. I don't know what happened, but
I got it to work. Still I had much worse problems than that. The gnome panel
disappeared, and I had no access to internet, as a matter of fact I couldn't do 
anything, cause there was no way to click on anything: no terminal :no firefox
nothing. I finally figured out that you can get to terminal with cont-alt-F2 or 
something (I don't remember what the exact key sequence is) and I reinstalled 
gnome panel in the command line. Besides that I ran across 10 other issues, 
but solved them all. 

By the time you install ubuntu 3 times, you would have had the time to work 
out all the issues for one install. Of course I saw that it was necessary for you
to go with the alternate cd (I've been watching the threat) because raid was 
not supported in the others, but the bottom line is that you are just going to 
have to install and work out all the bugs. If you install ubuntu, you are always
going to have issues. Which, as you know, can be compounded by the hardware
combination you chose.

Anyways, if you want raid, sounds like you have no choice, but to go with raid.
I'm getting ready to install minimal ubuntu, and use IceWM, and just install what 
I want. Of course it will be a dual boot, with ubuntu so if I break it, I have a fall back.

I understand it's nice to have all the tools that ubuntu offers, but there is so much 
crap on there that it seems to defeat the purpose of linux. For instance, does anyone
in the group use Evolution? Ubuntu just really seems bloated to me. On the other hand
I like it and will continue using it. I'm just going to learn how to remaster the thing,
and start making my own custom version.
