Then I'd have to keep at least one other offsite backup; maybe I need
to, anyway. And because we keep multiple backups I backup to a
tarball; I didn't make that clear previously. Until I actually fill up
the drive with tarballs I'll have room for more than one backup in case
I do something stupid.
Unmounting a drive is a lot safer imho, but maybe I'm wrong. It's part
of a script and only takes a small part of a second.

I would too ... and then use external backup via usb. In fact that was
my first choice, but until I figured out how to make software RAID work
(see my other posts) it didn't appear to be an option. I've got it set
up now.
