Sorry it took so long for me to report back; the fact is that the system got
so bad I couldn't use it, and it took about a month to get a new system
working.
I now believe it was some kind of hardware incompatibility, because I
installed 64-bit Kubuntu 9.10 on new hardware and moved over the entire user,
and now everything is running perfectly (except that occasionally the desktop
crashes and restarts without losing anthing; all the other windows stay open).
So I'm staying with Kubuntu 9.10 for now.
