Re the Oracle/Sun thing:
Sun "software":
- MySQL, it is more a brand name than it is a software package at this
moment. While of course MySQL has a huge install base 5.1+ is
considered beta software at best. Good reads regarding this are the
numerous outsider blogs and specifically Monty's blog.
- MySQL for pay, well that already exists I don't see Oracle changing
this though I do see them moving things to a cleaner approach with
less version confusion and making MySQL fit below Oracle instead of a
direct competitor.
- OpenSolaris - Is it really a growing OS? or is it just clinging on
desperately like Sun itself?
- Solaris - dead, in maintenance and OpenSolaris is the real product now
- Java - Oracle users this _alot_ no changes here except maybe
improvements in a language which is decidly getting beaten up by every
other language because of the issues in programming it, using it and
speed etc.
Sun "hardware":
- Dead, dying and so expensive it is not worth it generally. Oracle is
more interested in their long term contracts because Oracle+Sun has
been the defacto standard for years. They won't stop their Linux work
because that is making them more money/goodwill etc but they will
again suck up the hardware so it works in their "Oracle" nitches more
appropriately, streamline things and cut the cruft. Hardware
development will continue or will be spun off and sold. Oracle is a
software company so unless they see a real gem I doubt they will
continue to invest in this area of the business. High-end and POS
hardware I see as the best possibility of "staying" since those areas
give Oracle the best market penetration methods.
Anyways not suprised they picked Sun up, IBM would have but I think
they realized the anti-trust stuff would be a serious pita (which of
course now oracle has to go through).
my 2cents
