There are two ways to do this. First of all, Chris is right; you have
to forward the port through his router if he's not connected directly
to his modem (note, some ISPs offer modems with a built-in router; ask
here and give model numbers if you're not sure).
Next, to keep track of his DHCP-based IP#:
You can either him sign up with one of those DNS-hosting companies that
host dynamic IP#s; one example (I have no connection with them) is:
http://www.dyndns.com/services/dns/dyndns/
They're free. You get some software to install on his system so they'll
keep track of his whereabouts.
Another way to do it (this is NOT recommended because it only works if
his system can send email when you want to log in): have him send you
an email from his system, then look at the headers to determine his
IP#.
I've used both systems; I prefer the former.
